Development Log


Development process:

The development process began with noting down some ideas for 2D endless runner games. After meeting together as a group, we decided to have an elemental theme to make it stands out from the rest of the endless runners. It would have three icons each indicating water, fire, and ice. Pressing one of those icons would result in the player's appearance/projectiles changing to that respective element. 

Then, we quickly decided to implement an order of restriction: fire beats ice, ice beats water, and water beats fire. For example, fire enemies can be taken down only if you're in water form. The player has to switch between different phases to pass elemental barriers. This idea shaped most of the design and obstacles which followed. We also agreed that it would not include the left and right buttons, as having too many buttons would be difficult to swipe up/down. Instead, the player will keep running to the right for as long as possible.

In the second week, we implemented the endless feature and added basic gameplay such as changing the color of the player, swipe movements, and shooting mechanics. We also created a set of obstacles to avoid the feeling of repetition, where each time the game will generate a random combination of obstacles from the set. The difficulty ramp is also implemented by increasing the speed of the player. After having the basic foundation completed, we started looking at things like art, animations, and UI during the third week. We made our own sprites and animations e.g. characters, enemies, platforms, elemental barriers... We also worked on perfecting the UI system such as the start scene and added sound effects to make the game more complete.

Summary of playtesting:

Playtest Results Week 1:

  • the game is too easy, so make them more complex(hard)
  • Add obstacles  
  • Come up with a theme

Playtest Results Week 2:

  • Add Graphics and animation
  • Make is seamless
  • Add exit, resume and restart screen
  • Randomize obstacles and enemies
  • Add better sounds

Playtest Results Week 3:

  • Add ending and winning scene
  • Add more enemies
